Hugo Correction Announced

April 1, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CORRECTION MADE TO HUGO BEST DRAMATIC PRESENTATION CATEGORY

Nippon 2007 announces that it has made an error in tabulating nomination votes for one category of the 2007 Hugo Awards. As a result the film Pan's Labyrinth was mistakenly omitted from the final ballot and another film was mistakenly included. Nippon 2007 is distributing corrected ballots and has announced steps to try to ensure that the error has no effect on the awards.

During a final audit of the Hugo Nomination Ballots it was discovered that the Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form data set had been corrupted. The number of records was correct so there was no immediate indication that the data had been corrupted. It was only during the subsequent audit that the corruption was discovered. We apologize to everyone for this error.

All data has been completely re-tabulated and only the Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form was affected. The following nominees should have been shown on the ballot:

Dramatic Long Form
Votes: 677 Voters: 243
Range: 40 - 102

Children of Men Screenplay by Alfonso Cuaron and Timothy J. Sexton. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron. (Universal Pictures)

Pan's Labyrinth Screenplay by Guillermo del Toro. Directed by Guillermo del Toro. (Picturehouse)

The Prestige Screenplay by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan. Directed by Christopher Nolan. (Touchstone Pictures)

A Scanner Darkly Screenplay by Richard Linklater. Directed by Richard Linklater. (Warner Independent Pictures)

V for Vendetta Screenplay by The Wachowski Brothers. Directed by James McTeigue (Warner Bros.)

All online forms have been updated to reflect the correction that was necessary. You may download a corrected form directly from the website at: www.nippon2007.us
The corrected ballot will also be included in Progress Report 5.

A Postcard will be sent to all members to notify them of the change in this category as well.

The Hugo Administrator will make every effort to contact anyone who has already voted or who subsequently votes using the uncorrected ballot. These voters will be given an opportunity to revise their votes in the Best Dramatic Presentation Category. Anyone who may have already returned his or her ballot may also correct this category by contacting the Hugo Administrator at: hugoadmin@nippon2007.us with a revised vote in this category. You may also vote online using the PIN and your membership number that was on the recent mailing of the Hugo and Site Selection Ballots and will also be included with Progress Report 5. Your online ballot will take precedence over a written ballot if both are received.

As a further precaution for the final tabulation, the ballots will be counted simultaneously by two different parties in two different locations to ensure that the data received is correct.

Please contact: hugoadmin@nippon2007.us with any questions.

Our apologies for the inconvenience and embarrassment this has caused. We will work with all individuals to make sure this situation is handled quickly and effectively for everyone concerned. We ask that if you see the incorrect information posted anywhere that you notify us at hugoadmin@nippon2007.us so that we can contact the poster with the correct information. Sadly, this is not an "April Fools Joke"; despite the misfortune of today's date. We wanted to release the correct information as soon as we were sure of the problem and the solution.
